Volt & Model S Impress

Canadian EV Sales surged in March to near record numbers, circa 732 EV's were registered, which represents a 51% increase regarding last year.

The Tesla Model S and Chevrolet Volt represented two thirds of deliveries, consolidating their leadership positions, with the GM product growing three-fold Year-on-Year, and beating its Canadian sales record, that dated back from Gen 1.

On the other hand, the Nissan Leaf, despite growing 32% YoY, failed to follow the top two numbers, selling  just 98 units.

Tesla vs The Others (Canada Edition)

As Elon Musk pointed out, the real competition of Tesla aren't other EV's, but the ICE best selling models, so let's look how the Model S stands in Canada (1)

PlModelMar.
1Mercedes CLS / E-Class 364
2Tesla Model S e)250
3BMW 5-Series173
4Jaguar XF109
5Audi A6103

Looking at theMarch numbers, the Model S won the Second Spot, beating the BMW 5-Series, while the Mercedes CLS / E-Class duo is starting to look more attainable to reach.

(1) - Unlike in markets across the pond, the full-size car market in Canada is much more diversified, with Chevy Impalas, Malibus, Chrysler 300, Dodge Chargers, etc, all theoretical adversaries to the Model S, but Tesla's direct competition isn't there, so the Model S is only compared with cars with similar price and concept.

Tesla Home Run(s) Edition

In March, deliveries of the Palo Alto company went through the roof, with the Model S beating the all-time record for a single model in the US market, with over 3.500 units logged last month, but also the Model X finally pumping out decent numbers, delivering close to 2.000 units, ending as the third best selling plug-in of March. Add that to the successful presentation of the Model 3, and you have a streak of home runs for the all-electric manufacturer last month...

For more on Tesla, don't miss the Tesla Model S vs ICE competition ranking at the bottom, yet another home run is being presented there...

But there were also other great performers last month, with the Chevrolet Volt delivering 1.865 units, tripling sales YoY and giving signs that it could be the only model to give Tesla a run for the money, good performance also for the Ford Fusion Energi, registering a rather surprising 1.238 units, while two rookies are impressing: The Audi A3 e-Tron (332 units) and Hyundai Sonata Plug-In (275) continue to improve their previous performances, and might end on some 600 units/month as cruising speed.

All this contributed for record(?) March, with total sales above 13.000 units, with numbers up 34% YoY, it looks that the US EV market is picking up speed, with the EV share now above last year result (0.67% vs 0.66%).

Looking at the YTD models ranking, a word of notice goes for the Tesla Model X, up to #5 and looking like it could reach the last place of the podium soon.

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla (31%, up 9%) continues to increase share, while Chevrolet (17%, down 1%) has managed to keep Ford (16%, down 2%) at bay.

Final mention to the Toyota Mirai career, 41 units were delivered last month, increasing the tally to 97 units this year.

The Model S managed to win its class Best Seller trophy for the first time, beating both the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5-Series while the rest of the competition was eonsbehind these three.

Now that the Model X is being produced in significant volumes, it will be interesting to see how it will compare against the BMW X5's and Audi Q7's in the near future...

Automotive News Looking For EV's - Germany April 2016 (Berlin) - SIBEJO-

Only in Berlin: Citroen C-Zero, the I-Miev french cousin, parked with a fleet of Trabants on the other side of the fence.

Having been in Berlin for a couple of days, naturally i did a bit of EV searching, with the only species spotted being a bunch of I-Miev family cars, one Model S, one BMW i3 (Company car), one e-Up! and...not much else.

Where are all the Berlin Plug-ins?

Long Hard Road...

Out of Hell is what this market seems destined to have in 2016, after fiscal changes that led to a sales fever in the last months of 2015, this EV market has been suffering from a prolonged hangover period, with YTD sales falling 80% regarding the same period last year.

Looking at the models ranking, the Renault Zoe has been imune to the sales slide (Actually, its sales were up 26%), leading the ranking, followed by the Tesla Model S sport-sedan-sexy-thingy, and the VW e-Up!.

Two niches unaffected by the fiscal changes were Plug-in hybrids and Fuel Cell Vehicles, the first type of vehicles saw its sales grow 46% YoY, now representing 16% of all Plug-in sales (Last year they represented just 3%), while FCEV's continue to present symbolic numbers, in total there were 5 units delivered this year (3 Hyundai and 2 Toyota's).

Automotive News Iceland March 2016 - SIBEJO-

Nissan Leaf #1

The Icelandic EV market started the year with over 100 newplug-ins sold in the First Quarter, 21% above the same period last year, so the prospects for the rest of the year are optimistic.

Looking at the models ranking, the Nissan Leaf is back at the leadership, running ahead of the PHEV pack (Golf GTE, Outlander PHEV and Volvo XC90 T8) that is chasing the Best Seller title.

The aforementioned picture makes Iceland another market where plug-in hybrids are on the rise (49% share vs 36% in 2015), something which isn't strange to the fact that there are many more to choose from and in different sizes...

Looking at the remaining models, the Kia Soul EV is not fulfilling the expectations created by the good performance in the last months of 2015, something that can also be said by the VW e-Golf, leader last year and now in a discrete #5.

In the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen (30%) continues in the lead. followed by Nissan (24%) and Mitsubishi (17%).
