Tough life for these two EV's |
PHEV's on the Rise Edition
In April there were 4.255 EV's sold, up 61% YoY, with the EV Share stable at 30%, with the bulk of growth coming from PHEV's, which have seen their importance grow from 25% last year to 42% right now, and it wouldn't be surprising to see PHEV's grow to over 50% before year end.
Underlining the previous thoughts, and looking exclusively at the EV monthly models ranking, the VW Golf GTE (602 units, new pb) has won the Monthly Best Selling title, the second consecutive time a plug-in hybrid wins that honor, with two other PHEV's appearing in the ranking: The Outlander PHEV was Third with 507 units, while the VW Passat GTE had a best ever score of 361 units and promises to be one of the surprises of this year.
The disappointment of the month was the VW e-Golf, the 489 units registered were its worst result in 16 months, a sign that middle-of-the-road buyers are returning to the Leaf and/or shifting to the plug-in hybrid GTE?

Looking at the year to date EV ranking, the main news were the one position drop of the Tesla Model S to #7, changing places with the Audi A3 e-Tron, while the VW Passat GTE jumped five positions to #9 and is now looking to reach a Top 5 position soon.
A special mention for the good numbers of the BMW 225xe Active Tourer, with 147 units, its best month to date, allowing it to climb one position to #18.
Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen (32%, up 3%) continues in the lead, followed at a distance by Nissan (14%) and Mitsubishi (12%), with BMW (11%) on the lookout for a slip from the adversaries to join the podium.

e) Estimate
A small note to Fuel Cells, two additional Hyundai ix35 FCEV were added, increasing the yearly tally to 7 registrations, 6 Hyundai ix35 FCEV and 1 Toyota Mirai, it looks that the japanese model didn't won much love in Norway. Is it the looks?
Models breakdown by Fuel Source
The percentage of plug-ins in the general ranking is so significant, that we've decided to make a separate table for the breakdown of models by fuel source:Pl | Model | Sales |
1 | Volkswagen Golf ICE | 622 |
2 | Volkswagen Golf GTE | 602 |
3 | Nissan Leaf | 541 |
4 | Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV | 507 |
5 6 7 8 9 10 | Volkswagen e-Golf Toyota Auris Skoda Octavia Toyota Yaris Volkswagen Passat GTE Volkswagen Passat ICE | 489 426 383 362 361 323 |
With 30% share, the EV's performance in the general ranking is becoming increasingly more relevant, of the 1.713 units sold by the leader VW Golf in March, only 622 didn't had a plug, meaning that 64% of all Golf's sold had plug-in capabilities.
If we split models by fuel source, the VW Golf ICE just managed to be the best selling model in April, outselling the Golf GTE by 20 units, followed by the Nissan Leaf, Outlander PHEV and VW e-Golf, making 4 out of the Top 5 models wearing a plug. Not bad, eh?
But this is not all, in #9 we have the VW Passat GTE, which managed to outsell for the first time the number of regular Passat's.
