Automotive News Looking For EV's - Spain (Barcelona) - SIBEJO-

Toyota Prius taxis are everywhere...

The first thing that struck me when I arrived at the Airport was the large amount of Toyota Prius taxis, I know they are not plug-ins and they shouldnt be on this post, but it was hard to escape the fact that some 25% of all taxis were Priuses (Prii? Whats the name for a group of Prius?), with this model representing an even larger percentage of taxis in the Old Town.

I knew the Toyota Prius was a popular choice for taxi fleets in Spain, but in Barcelona they have a high point, and its not only taxis, the Police also uses them.

...I mean, EVERYWHERE
Third Generation (The one above) represent the largest part of them, but theres also some Second Generation units running around, as well as the seven seater Prius + / V.
First and Fourth Generations are a rarity, I saw one of each but both were from private owners.

Moving on to actual EVs, the most visible were fleet units, as with the City-owned Piaggio EVs, working as garbage trucks in the narrow Ramblas of the Old Town

Piaggio EV mini-garbage trucks

Or the rental Renault Twizzies, which are one of the best ways to know the town, not only they feel at ease in the (many times) clogged streets of Barcelona, but they are also a blast to drive, especially once you incorporate the vacations-modeand let yourself go from every day rational thinking, as this is probably one of the most suited vehicles to use during the always short summer vacations periods.

33C, sun & beaches nearby: The ideal place for a Twizy

Back to more mainstream EVs, there werent that many zooming around, I counted one Renault Zoe, one BMW i3 and two Nissan Leafs, one of them being a taxi.

These days spent here helped me to understand why the Spanish EV Market has such high share of LCVs and fleet deals, it seems that private buyers are still unaware / reluctant to jump into the EV Bandwagon, whereas fleet buyers, both public and private, are more open to it, not only on light vehicles, but also regarding buses, as an important percentage of them were either hybrid or running on Natural Gas.

A final note for a Solar Hybrid Catamaran boat that makes small cruise trips along the Barcelona Coast, the lack of engine noise during the trip makes the whole experience much more pleasant and inviting, making me wonder if the next step for transport electrification wont happen in boats

Caliente!

EV Sales continue hot in Spain, with 334 sales, up 61% YoY, with YTD sales shooting up a sensational 162% YoY, an impressive result, with the EV Share slightly down to 0.36% EV Share.

The Best Seller Of The Month was the surprising Renault Kangoo ZE, with 46 units, earning its first monthly trophy this year, while at the same time jumping two positions to #4.

In the YTD ranking, if the podium remained unchanged, there were several changes below it, besides the aforementioned Kangoo ZE rise to #4, the Volvo XC90 PHEV (32 sales, pb) jumped three positions to #8, while the BMW 330e did the same thing, reaching #16.

Two new EV's joined the ranking, with the Citroen e-Mehari registering its first 9 units, all in the Balearic Islands, while the Audi Q7 e-Tron vessel SUV landed with 5 units.

On the manufacturers ranking, Nissan stays in the leadership (21%, down 1%), but has lost 8% share in these last three months, being chased by the new runner-up Renault (18%, up 1%) and Mitsubishi (17%, down 1%).

EV Sales continue hot in Spain, with 446 sales, the triple of April '15, with YTD sales shooting up a sensational 162% YoY, an impressive result, pulling the EV Share slightly up to a new record, 0.39% EV Share.

The Best Seller Of The Month was once again the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, with 68 units, earning its second monthly trophy this year., while at the same time assuring a more comfortable position in the YTD leadership, with 56 units of advance to the Runner-Up Nissan Leaf.

The Bronze Medal has a new bearer, with the Renault Zoe back to the podium, if only by six units.

Two EV's deserve a special mention, if the 64 units of the Smart Fortwo ED can be mostly attributed to the Car2Go car-sharing fleet, the 44 BMW i3's are a rather surprising performance, now that the improved range version is a couple of months away. Discounts and promotions can do wonders...

On the manufacturers ranking, Nissan stays continues in the leadership (22%, down 3%), but has lost 7% share in these last two months, now being chased by Mitsubishi (18%) and Renault (17%, up 1%).

Caliente!

EV Sales continue hot in Spain, with 463 sales, the triple of April '15, with YTD sales shooting up a sensational 188% YoY, an impressive result, pulling the EV Share to a record 0.38%, a new record for the Spain.

There was a leadership change in this year accumulated sales, with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV returning to #1 and displacing the Nissan Leaf to the runner-up position.

The 144 units registered in April by the Outlander PHEV set a new absolute monthly record for a PHEV, while the 270 units YTD sold in only four months means that the 2012 all-time sales record (943 units, by the Renault Twizy) could be in danger for the first time ever...

Two EV's deserve a special mention, if the 51 units of the Smart Fortwo ED can be mostly attributed to the Car2Go car-sharing fleet, the six Model S deliveries represent a  new (admittedly small) record for the american car, with an increasing number of Superchargers popping up in Spain, the demand for the all-electric sports sedan is to expected to only go higher.

On the manufacturers ranking, Nissan stays continues in the leadership (25%, down 4%), followed by the new runner-up Mitsubishi (18%, up 6%) and Renault (16%).

A curious fact is that two of the Top 5 best selling models are LCV's, a rare event nowadays.

Automotive News Spain March 2016 - SIBEJO-

The Rain in Spain...

...Brings EV's to the plain!

This month promises to be fertile in record numbers across the EV markets, in this case, the 544 sales is a two unit improvement over the previous record, set last October, with sales shooting up a sensational 191% YoY, an impressive result, especially considering that the overall auto market is stagnant. This allowed the EV Market to grow to 0.35%, a new record for the Spain.

The Nissan Leaf cemented the leadership, registering 90 units and beating its previous best result, set in October 2013 (89 units). The Second Placed Mitsu Outlander PHEV also set a record, with 80 units, a record for any plug-in hybrid in this market, while the Nissan e-NV200 / Evalia also impressed, scoring 64 units, a new personal best, rising to #3.

Good sales month for the VW Passat GTE, with 46 units, indicating that it could be strong competition to Spain's favorite PHEV, the Outlander.

Two EV's from the old guard also posted good results, if the 35 units of the Smart Fortwo ED can be mostly attributed to the Car2Go car-sharing fleet, it is harder to find a reason for the sudden rise of the Citren C-Zero (17 units).

An unusual registration is the single SEAT Mii EV registration, a purely demonstrative vehicle or a sign that the spanish automaker has finally got green light from the VAG Mothership to go electric?

On the manufacturers ranking, Nissan stays firm in the leadership (29%, down 2%), followed by Renault (16%, down 1%) and Mitsubishi (12%).

A curious fact is that four of the Top 5 best selling models belong to the Renault-Nissan Alliance, a primacy that even in France is not happening.

Automotive News Spain January 2016 - SIBEJO-

A Good Start Edition

A record 227 units were registered in the first month on the year, with sales shooting up 211% YoY, it looks that the Spanish EV market is finally having a good year start, let's that this keeps on going like this throughout the year.

The Nissan Leaf started the year with the right foot wheel, registering 62 units, significantly ahead of the 2015 Best Seller, the Outlander PHEV, which started the year in Second, followed by the BMW i3, with 20 units.

Good sales month for the BMW i8, with 11 deliveries, its best result in nine months, while the VW e-Golf reached for the first time the two digits, selling 10 units in January.

Two newcomers have landed in January, the BMW 225xe Active Tourer landed with 5 units, but the most impressive was the Volvo XC90 T8 PHEV, which registered 11 units right in its debut month, already surpassing the BMW X5 PHEV (8 units) and Porsche Cayenne Plug-In (7) in the race for Best Selling Luxury SUV.

On the manufacturers ranking, Nissan started the year in the leadership (32%), followed by BMW (19%) and Mitsubishi (12%).
