Sweden's new plug-in favorite

Outlander PHEV Recovers

The Swedish EV market has managed to stay above the 1.000 in July, with 1.005 units, achieving it for the fifth consecutive time, all while improving sales 80% over the same period last year, with the EV Share hitting once again a new record at 3.32%.

Looking at the monthly models ranking, the VW Passat GTE, was once again the leader, with 446 units (Sixth consecutive monthly Best Selling trophy), representing 29% of all VW Passat sales, if the GTE midsizer were to be considered a unique model, it would be ranked #11 in the general ranking.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was once again the runner-up, having sold 113 units, while Volvo had again a good sales month, placing the XC90 Plug-in in Third (74 units) and the V60 Plug-In in Fourth, with 71 units.

Finally, the Tesla Model S ended July in Fifth, with 57 units, a rather underwhelming performance, having seen its sales drop 45%.

Looking at the YTD ranking, there were a number of changes:

- The BMW 330e climbed to #7, switching positions with its i3 relative;

- VW had a good month, with the Golf GTE climbing to #9 and the e-Up! to #14;

There were two new entries in the Swedish EV Market, the Audi Q7 e-Tron landed with 13 units, a good sign for future performances, while the Tesla Model X has made its first registration, it will be interesting to see by how much will the SUV model outsell the Model S brethren.

On the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen (35, up 2%) is firm in the leadership, followed by Volvo (18%) and BMW (12%) in Third, with Mitsubishi (11%) a close Fourth.

If we combine July sales of regular hybrids with plug-ins, we see the Toyota hybrids behind the VW Passat GTE, with the Outlander PHEV in Fourth, followed by the Volvo XC90 PHEV.

Outlander PHEV Recovers

The Swedish EV market is officially on fire, with 1.376 units in June, up 52% YoY, making this the third fourth consecutive month above the 1.000 units, with the EV Share hitting once again a new record at 3.22%.

Looking at the monthly models ranking, the VW Passat GTE, was once again the leader, with 453 units (Another new Personal Best), representing 28% of all VW Passat sales, if the GTE midsizer were to be considered a unique model, it would be ranked #16 in the general ranking.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is recovering its form, having sold 248 units and hitting #2 last month, while Volvo had again a good sales month, placing once again the V60 Plug-in wagon in Third (132 units) and the XC90 PHEV SUV in Fourth, with a personal best 112 units.

Finally, the Tesla Model S ended June in Fifth with 77 units, a rather underwhelming performance, considering its half of what it sold last March or in June '15.

Looking at the YTD ranking, there were a number of changes:

- The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV jumped to the runner-up position, its highest standing this year;

- Volvo XC90 PHEV, continues to climb positions, it is now #4, tied with the Nissan Leaf;

- Good month for BMW, with the 330e (68 units, pb) up two positions to #8 and the 225xe AT climbing one position to #12;

- The Renault Kangoo ZE climbed one position to #14, thanks to a year best performance (21 units).

On the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen (33, up 1%) is firm in the leadership, followed by Volvo (18%, down 1%) and BMW (12%, down 1%) in Third.

If we combine June sales of regular hybrids with plug-ins, we see the Toyota hybrids losing ground, the Auris Hybrid was surpassed by the VW Passat GTE, while the Yaris Hybrid stepped down from #3 in favor of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Sweden's got a new plug-in favorite

The Winner Takes It All... Edition

The Swedish EV market is officially on fire, with 1.211 units in April, up 67% YoY, making this the third consecutive month above the 1.000 units, a new record, with YTD sales up 72%, we are headed for some 16.000 units by year end, significantly above my prediction in the beggining of this year. How i love to be wrong this way...

As result of these brilliant performance, the EV Share surpassed for the first time the 3% barrier to  3.08%, an all-time record in the Swedish EV market.

Looking at the monthly models ranking, the VW Passat GTE, ensured its second third fourth leadership score, with 365 units (Again new Personal Best), giving no chance for the remaining competition and providing a whole new meaning to the old ABBA song portraited in this months title.

Now that we are on the ABBA songs subject, another theme from the band has occurred to me, looking at May's Second Placed Outlander PHEV, the "The King Has Lost His Crown" song illustrates accurately its performance, after a rough time in the beggining of the year, the japanese SUV, winner of the 2014 & 2015 Best Seller titles, is returning to its old form, but the 200-ish results that granted it supremacy in the past is no longer enough to steal the leadership from the VW Passat GTE...Will there be a clash of Titans?

Volvo had again a good sales month, placing the V60 Plug-in wagon in Third (157 units, best result in three years!) and the XC90 PHEV SUV in Fourth, with a personal best 101 units.

A telling tale of the current trend towards PHEV's, is the fact that the four best selling models are plug-in hybrids, something also visible in the BEV / PHEV breakdown, where 100% electric vehicles are down to 31% share versus 40% last year.

Looking at the YTD ranking, there were a number of changes:

- The Volvo V60 Plug-In climbed to the runner-up position, its highest standing since January;

- Last Year Best Seller, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, continued to recover, climbing one position to #4;

- The VW Golf GTE went back to #8, while the BMW X5 PHEV went up one position to #11;

- The current PHEV SUV trend has a new player, with the Mercedes GLC350e registering its first two units, hopefully it will sell a lot more than its larger sibling GLE500e, but with that model languishing in #24 with 8 units, that's not saying much...

2On the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen (32, up 1%) is firm in the leadership, followed by Volvo (19%, up 1%) and BMW (13%, down 1%) in Third.

Final mention to the two registrations of the Hyundai ix35 FCEV, increasing the 2016 tally to 5 units. As for the Toyota Mirai, Swedes are still safe from crossing with the Terminator...

If we combine May sales of regular hybrids with plug-ins, we see that the Toyota hybrids are becoming increasingly attainable by Plug-ins, if the Auris Hybrid still leads the way, the VW Passat GTE is closing in and looks to reach it soon, while the #3 Yaris Hybrid is looking also perfectly reachable by other Plug-ins in a couple of months.

EV Bus Route 55 -- Gothenburg's First Electric Bus

Gothemburg, also known as Volvo-Land, which is understandable if you consider that both Volvo Trucks and Car companies are based there. And it shows...They are everywhere!

Regarding EV's, plug-in Volvos were relatively common to see (Including the above electric Volvo Bus), in the two days there, i saw 2 or three V60 Plug-ins and one XC90 T8, but the real surprise was the number of Nissans, 3 or 4 Leafs, but also one e-NV200 and other Evalia electric.

We encountered plug-ins with relative ease, the aforementioned brands were the most common type of plug-ins, with the random I-Miev (Or was it a C-Zero?), Prius Plug-in or Outlander PHEV zooming around.

Strangely, no Tesla here. Are their potential customers here all driving Volvos?

The Dog Days Are Over... Edition

The Swedish EV market has recovered from a weak start of the year and is pressing forward, with 1.252 units in April, up 84% YoY, making this the thrid best sales month ever, only below last March and December.

As a result of this brilliant performance, the EV Share jumped to 2.95%, an all-time record for the Swedish EV market.

Looking at the monthly models ranking, the VW Passat GTE, ensured its second third leadership score, with 297 units (New Personal Best), winning the hearts and wallets of middle-managers across Sweden.

Volvo had a great sales month, placing the V60 Plug-in wagon in Third (131 units, best result in 18 months) and the XC90 PHEV SUV in Fifth, with a personal best 95 units.

Looking at the YTD ranking, there were a number of changes:

- The Volvo's recovered one position each, with the V60 Plug-in rising to Third and the XC90 PHEV to Fourth;

- The 2015 Best Seller, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, jumped two positions to #5, contributing for the three position slump of the Tesla Model S to #6;

- The Renault Zoe rose one position to #8;

- The VW BEV's had a surprising good month, with the e-Up! (24 units, best result since August '14), jumping three positions to #15 and its larger brother e-Golf also climbing one position to #16.

On the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen (31%, up 1%) is stable in the leadership, followed by Volvo (18%, up 1%) and BMW (14%) in Third.
